What type of garden fence lasts the longest? ›

A metal fence can potentially last longer than a timber fence. Typically, a metal fence can last from 25-35 years but can last longer if you choose a good quality product. Look for a long service life guarantee as you will know a manufacture is confident in their product and the longevity of it.

For residential properties, classic wood fences are typically 6 to 8 feet tall to ensure adequate privacy and security. Chain link fences in residential areas often range from 3 to 6 feet. Commercial fences are generally taller to provide increased security, with standard heights ranging from 6 to 10 feet.

Fence panel come in a range of sizes, but most manufacturers will make panels in standard heights. They include, 3ft, 4ft, 5ft, and 6ft or 0.91m, 1.22m, 1.52m and 1.83m. Most panels however, will come in 1.83m or 6ft wide as the only standard option for fence panel width.

Western Red Cedar is probably the most popular timber for a garden fence and despite being quite yellow when it's first installed it does quickly age and turn a more silvery colour.

PVC fencing. The cheapest way to create a fence for your home is by getting one made from PVC. Such fences substitute wooden pickets and stakes to offer your protection from the outside world. PVC sleeves improve the stability of wooden posts used as a fence, reducing the cost of material and the labor used.

Privacy fences, by design must be tall enough to obstruct the view into your property. For that reason, privacy fences are typically between 6-8 ft. tall in residential areas. The maximum privacy fence height is 8 ft in most cases.

Alterations to existing fences

This regulation limits the maximum height of a garden boundary fence to two metres. If you're considering such alterations, first verify the current height of the fence. Surpassing this limit may require planning permission from local authorities.

All materials are manufactured to length, making installation a breeze and reducing waste. Standard panel heights are 1200mm, 1500mm and 1800mm. For the optional screen-top panels add a further 300mm.
