While the nominees for the 93rd annual Academy Awards were unveiled a month ago and the event is coming up on Sunday, there is still time to see some major titles you may have missed.
Leading the nominees this year isMank,which received 10 nods including best picture, best director for David Fincher, best actor for Gary Oldman and best actress for Amanda Seyfried.
Chloé Zhao’s sweeping drama Nomadland,which has picked up numerous awards already this season,received six noms along with Sony Pictures Classics’ The Father, Warner Bros. Judas and the Black Messiah, Amazon’s Sound of Metal and Netflix’s The Trial of the Chicago 7.
Netflix’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, an adaptation of August Wilson’s play, is up for five noms including best performance for the late Chadwick Boseman.

MANK is set in the 1930s and follows alcoholic writer Herman J. Mankiewicz (played by Gary Oldman) as he develops the screenplay for Citizen Kane. The film, based on a screenplay by Fincher’s late father Jack, also stars Lily Collins.

NOMADLAND stars Frances McDormand (nominated for her performance) as a woman who embarks on a solitary journey through the American West. The film is up for best picture, with Zhao vying for best director. The film’s other noms include best adapted screenplay, editing and cinematography.

THE TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO 7is writer and director Aaron Sorkin’s visualization of the 1969 trial of the Chicago Seven, a group of men charged with conspiracy and inciting riots during the Democratic National Convention. The film, starring Sasha Baron Cohen, Frank Langella, Eddie Redmayne and Michael Keaton, is up for awards including best picture and best original screenplay.

MA RAINEY’S BLACK BOTTOM stars Boseman and Viola Davis, both nominated for their performances in the musical film about blues singer Ma Rainey and her band in the 1920s. Among its five noms, the movie is up for best costume design, production design and makeup.

MINARIhails from director Lee Isaac Chung, and follows a Korean family who move to Arkansas in search of the American dream. The film stars Steven Yeun and Yuh-Jung Youn, both nominated for their performances. Chung is up for best director and best original screenplay.

PROMISING YOUNG WOMANis the debut feature of writer and director Emerald Fennell, and stars Carey Mulligan confronting the traumas of her past. With Fennell’s director nom along with Zhao, the Oscars made history for a record number of female directors nominated in one year.

SOUND OF METALstars Riz Ahmed as a drummer who loses his hearing and has to adjust to that new reality. Ahmed is nominated for his lead performance, along with Paul Raci in the supporting actor category. The film from director Darius Marder is also up for best picture, original screenplay, sound and film editing.

SOUL is the buzziest animated nominee this year, starring the voices of Jamie Foxx and Tina Fey in a jazz-filled family adventure about a middle-school band teacher. In addition to the best animated film nom, Soul is up for best sound and best original score.

THE FATHER stars Anthony Hopkins as a man with dementia, and Olivia Colman as his daughter. The film is director Florian Zeller’s adaptation of his own play. Both lead actors are nominated for their performances, while the film is up for best adapted screenplay, production design and sound editing.

JUDAS AND THE BLACK MESSIAHstars Daniel Kaluuya as Fred Hampton and LaKeith Stanfield as the FBI informantwho betrayed the Illinois Black Panther Party chairman in director Shaka King’s political drama. Aside from its best picture nod, Kaluuya and Stanfield are nominated for their performances. The film is also up for best original screenplay, cinematography, and original song.

BORAT SUBSEQUENT MOVIEFILM is Sacha Baron Cohen’s latest mockumentary about the fictional Kazakh journalist, though in this film — a sequel to to 2006’s Borat — we meet his daughter Tutar, played by Oscar nominee Maria Bakalova. The film is also competing for best adapted screenplay.

TENET is Christopher Nolan’s latest action thriller, which stars John David Washington and is up for best visual effects and production design this year.

ANOTHER ROUND from director Thomas Vinterberg is among the best international feature film nominees, starring Mads Mikkelsen as a high school teacher who consumes — along with three others — alcohol on a daily basis to see how it affects his social and professional life.

MY OCTOPUS TEACHERis up for best documentary feature. The Netflix film, shot in waters off the South African coast, explores one man’s relationship with the sea creature.

ANIMATED SHORT FILMS
Among the six animated short film nominees is Pixar Animation Studios’Burrow, from director Madeline Sharafian, available on Disney +. Adrien Merigeau’s Genius Locican be found on Vimeo, while Will McCormack and Michael Govier’s If Anything Happens I Love You is on Netflix. LIVE ACTION SHORT FILMS
Doug Roland’s short Feeling Through is among the live-action short nominees, featuring a chance encounter between an in-need teenager and a deaf and blind man (Robert Tarango). The film, produced with the Helen Keller National Center, is free on YouTube. From director Anthony Giacchino, Colette follows 90-year-old Colette Marin-Catherine as she travels back to the German concentration camp where her brother perished 75 years prior.
